Pop powerhouse Reneé Rapp has just released her debut LP Snow Angel, out now for streaming on all platforms. Between going on tour, juggling her acting career, and opening up about her sexuality to the public, Reneé has a lot to spill and express within this album. Ever since the kickoff of her career back in 2018, Reneé’s success has been expanding exponentially. This album does a fantastic job of illustrating the excitement and struggle of balancing a multifaceted career in entertainment all while trying to figure out her own identity as she enters adulthood.
Following her success with acting on screen and on stage, Reneé has put her focus on her career as a recording artist. Ever since a young age, Reneé’s goal was to work as a singer/songwriter, and her upcoming album represents her finally getting to a point in her music career where she can say exactly what she wants to say how she wants to say it. The 12-track album gives insight into her growing maturity as an artist and a human being, and the songs off of Snow Angel accurately illustrate where she is currently both emotionally and artistically.
“I feel really proud about where this sonic pallet has gone and where we've ended up. I feel like if I put every genre that I'm obsessed with and took every artist that I idolized and then spit it out through my ears, this would be that.”
Reneé is past the idea of trying to make things comfortable or easily digested to unaccepting audiences, and her new album comes out with lyrics that are blatant and direct, showing her fearlessness in expressing herself and opening up about vulnerable subjects. Her song “So What Now” encapsulates her current attempts to look out for herself and rise above past situations and struggles to be the artist and the person that she strives to be.
Throughout Reneé's career, she has talked a lot about the concept of delusion and the role it has played within her career. Through listening to Snow Angel and hearing her talk about the album, it is clear that Renné has a high level of confidence in her work and in herself. Over the years, Reneé has learned to recognize the similarities in confidence and delusion, and during our talk with the singer/songwriter, she reflected on the interchangeability of the terms.
"Delusion doesn't have to be a bad thing. It can be a great thing. Especially as girls or non men, you are taught that if you come across as confident then that is not super cool, so let's mask it as delusion so that they can giggle with you and not be intimidated by you or bothered by your presence. So I think a lot of the times when I say delusion, it's to avoid people calling me a bitch because I believe in myself."
Anyone who looks at Reneé’s career and where she has come would be able to tell that she has finally settled into who she is. Her journey with accepting her sexuality and becoming comfortable with herself regardless of the judgment and opinion of strangers and people in the industry is extremely inspiring, which has allowed her strong bond with her fans to thrive. Renné recently came out publicly as bisexual, and songs like “Pretty Girls” show her struggling in her love life and battling concepts such as the hyper-sexualization of queer people.
When talking about her experience with coming out publicly, Reneé said,
“I have been out to different people for almost 10 years now, but since I have been publicly out, I have become so much more comfortable in myself…I am very thankful to have an enormous community of queer people around me who all identify in different ways and treat each other just the same. When you guys talk about being gay, it makes me feel cooler to be gay.”
Snow Angel is the perfect record for where we are now in pop music. With cutting lyrics and melodies that contrast from playful to insistent, Reneé made a record that celebrates femininity and criticizes modern romance. As a feminist, member of the LGBTQ community, and a young adult, Reneé’s transparency in her songwriting speaks to a generation. Her songs provide screamable lyrics that are anthemic for young women and queer people growing up in this day in age.
